@PLAY Parcours Trail

@PLAY’s Summit Lake research revealed that many residents still did not feel or take advantage of the improvements being made to the lake front. The primary reason for this was the lack of investment in the central neighborhood corridors and the perceived danger of crossing Lake Shore Blvd.

@PLAY developed a strategic plan to improve access to Summit Lake with a central neighborhood playground, public art installation, outdoor fitness area, and colorful sidewalk mural.

Open M Park was critical to the success of our strategy, because it represented an outstanding opportunity to challenge perception and inspire exploration between the lake front and residential corridors. For many residents, Open M Park was as far as they were willing to let their kids play and explore.

Art x Love worked in collaboration with Akron Public Schools, Summit Metro Parks, the City of Akron, neighborhood residents, and volunteers from First Serve to transform Open M Park into a vibrant and healthy recreation space. Our work included:

  • resurfacing the basketball court

  • carving a 1/3 mile fitness trail

  • building 8 parcours stations

  • custom-painting new backboards

  • adding court-side seats

  • installing new benches

  • painting a new picnic table

  • digging out and cleaning the old pavilion foundation

  • building a hillside staircase from the bus stop to the basketball court

  • custom-designing colorful parcours stations signs

This project was completed in the fall of 2018, and we look forward to activating it each Spring and Summer.
